The Importance of Puppy School and Socialisation

Our Geelong Puppy School offers an essential part of your dog’s development. Our classes help you bond with your puppy, assist your pup in developing crucial social and communication skills and teach your dog to navigate the human world safely.

Are you ready for the headaches, as well as the good times?

Getting excited about all the fun aspects of bringing a new puppy into your world is easy. The one thing we don’t prepare for well is when things go wrong… toilet training issues, destructive behaviours – wanting to scream as your puppy destroys another household item, the holes they rip into your arms, legs, feet, clothing, etc. A new puppy can be a blessing and a nightmare if you don’t know how to manage these situations and maintain your sanity.

Yes, there are plenty of YouTube and TikTok videos with a bucket load of advice, but who to listen to, and which method will work for your puppy? Cos, every puppy is an individual; what works for one will not necessarily work for another.

As a dog trainer, I knew the correct concepts of puppy training… Then, I got myself a puppy – a working-line Kelpie to be exact – and boy was I in for an awakening. Nothing quite prepares you for the 24/7 experience of living with a puppy, than living with a puppy!

Mojo, didn’t take to the crate well, and there was the biting. He wanted to put everything in his mouth, especially if it didn’t belong there. With him being a high-drive dog, I could not find his off switch, and the lack of sleep as we found our groove… puppydom is a journey, and one that is best done with the right support around you!

Puppy training is not all cuddles and kisses, there are challenges, and when facing challenges, a good puppy school is having someone in your corner, helping you through the good, the bad, and the ugly so that the puppy can grow into the best version of itself!

So, what does puppy socialisation actually mean?

Firstly, I will tell you what socialisation is not; at King’s K9 Dog Training, we don’t believe in letting your dog play with every dog at the park or on the street. We want pups to behave appropriately around other dogs and have doggie friends, but playing with unknown dogs can be a recipe for disaster – I have had many training consults where the dog was attacked by a dog when it was a puppy.

A better word for socialisation is exposure; we want to expose the puppy safely to new environments, surfaces, animals, noises, weather conditions, etc. We are helping your dog learn how to have a neutral response to the world around them.

If you expose your puppy to different situations and environments, it will learn how to react to them, or something similar, appropriately when they encounter them again in the future… the goal is to teach puppies to be neutral to the world.

Puppy School…

  • is a fantastic way to socialise your puppy appropriately.
  • Is an excellent way for you to learn about the world from your puppy’s perspective.
  • It can help you learn how to train your dog to help them be happy, healthy, and well-behaved in its new home and the world.
  • It is the support you need when things aren’t going to plan.

We hope you better understand how this Puppy School can benefit you and your puppy.

Remember that puppies are very social creatures and must learn to interact with other dogs, humans, and their environment. If they don’t receive proper training early, they may develop bad habits that will be hard (or sometimes impossible) to break later in life.
